The Distributors of TVA Power
The
Tennessee Valley Authority generates electricity, but it relies
on 155 different companies called distributorslocated
all over the Valleyto resell and distribute this power to
homes and businesses.
The distributors consist of municipal utilities and cooperatives, or co-ops. The municipal utilities are owned by a city, county, or town, and the co-ops generally serve the more rural areas of the Valley. All of them are publicly owned. That means theyre not in business to make a profit but to serve the needs of the people. In all, public power provides about 14 percent of the electricity in the U.S. and serves more than 46 million people.
A group called the Tennessee Valley Public Power Association represents most of the distributors of TVA power. The distributors work as partners with TVA to give the best service and prices to the people who use TVA power.
